Level Ground Trading supports small-scale Colombian sugarcane growers in the remote southern province of El Jabon, Huilla through their Panela de los Andes brand. The farmers grow sugar cane on mountain slopes at altitudes of 2,200 meters above sea level and hand-process it in a cottage industry press at the farm. Panela is a delicious brown sugar made from a blend of three species of high-altitude sugar cane. Slow to ripen, these canes produce a rich caramelized-flavoured sugar that maintains all of its natural vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Level Ground and Famicafé are currently working with farmers to obtain organic certification. The farmers utilize environmentally-friendly methods in their processes.
